The Atomic Bomb
This is a 22 slide power point which will take about 3 hours to complete.
It focuses on the questions surrounding the dropping of the atomic bomb. It contains a range of activities; sources and video clips with an extended assessment task at the end.
This answers the questions:
How does an atomic bomb work
What were the positives and negatives with regards to dropping the bomb
Why did the USA drop it?
I made this as part of a key stage 3 scheme of learning especially for students who are not continuing with history at GCSE so that they understand one of the most significant events of the twentieth century. This could also be used for the Superpower relations unit at GCSE.
COLD WAR PROPAGANDA
This is a lesson which forms part of a Year 9 scheme of learning on the 20th century world. It is particularly useful for students who have not chosen history at GCSE.
It contains opportunities to identify methods used by the USA and USSR to put across their message during the Cold War and focuses on a War of Words. Students will demonstrate that they understand messages and the author’s purpose by looking at a range of propaganda images and film clips. They will also have the opportunity to make their own piece of propaganda.
This is suitable for all abilities, and can also be used for GCSE.

VE Day on May 8th. It is suitable for primary and secondary school and contains:
An assembly/lesson - the first part of the ppt is an assembly containing images/clips/explanations about the significance of VE day and the aftermath of the war (approx 20 mins). If it is used as a lesson there are tasks incorporated in the 2nd part of the presentation to support building on writing evaluative answers (in this case weighing up the consequences of the aftermath of the Second World War). The lesson will take approximately an hour to teach, but students may need time to complete the work for homework.
A VE Day Quiz and discussion opportunity - useful for a tutorial or a history lesson. The quiz is on a ppt - so can be delivered to the whole class at the samr time - it is followed up with a discussion about VE Day.
VE Day timeline - this timeline contains 20 key events of 1945 leading to victory in Europe. Each event is on a separate sheet and contains an explanation and a colourful image - will need space for 20 sheets of A4 to go around the classroom.
VE Day wordsearch/quiz - can be used as a starter or an extension activity.
An alternative lesson - was Dresden justified or was it a war crime? Using sources and extended writing.
REMEMBERING VE DAY - LESSON - WAS DRESDEN JUSTIFIED OR A WAR CRIME?
This lesson has been created to recognise VE Day, and to help students look at source materials to reach a value judgment. It is suitable for most ages but particularly useful for either key stage 2 or 3.
It starts with information about VE day and the background to the war in the air with clips; images and statistics. It then presents the students with a wide range of source material which they have to categorise by making inferences and tabulating information. The main task is a piece of writing in the form of a newspaper report where students are judged on how effectively they communicate the conclusions they have drawn from the sources. The lesson ends with a class discussion which can be differentiated.
This is an appropriate lesson for VE Day, and takes about 1 hour to complete all activities.

8 powerpoints and resources containing approximately 12 x 1 hour lessons which introduce key stage 3 students to the key concepts and events of the Cold War. They contain opportunities to gain knowledge and practice key historical skills in preparation for GCSE. V.E. DAY IN THE HISTORY OR ENGLISH CLASSROOM
These resources covers skills required for success in English and Historycontain everything you need to help students understand the significance of VE Day.
The first resource contains an assembly (approx 20 mins) and an extended writing task for a lesson. The whole power point would take about an hour to teach and involves drawing on historical and literacy skills.
The second resource is a n alternative lesson which investigates the morality behind the bombing of Dresden - students use a wide range of historical source material to carry out an investigation and reach a judgment.
The final resource can either be used in a history lesson or a tutorial as a starter or fun activity to test knowledge in the form of a quiz/wordsearch for VE Day.

THE ARMS RACE
This is lesson 13 and 14 of a Year 9 scheme of learning made to cover the 20th century world. It has been created in a way that ensures that students who do not choose GCSE history are informed of key developments that are shaping our world today. Other lessons from this unit are also available. This can also be used for the teaching of GCSE.
IDEOLOGY GAME/ROLE PLAY/EVALUATIVE WRITING FOR EXAMINATION PRACTICE.
This resource focuses on explaining capitalism and communism through role play. Students are each given a character from either 1945 USSR or USA with information about their situation. They have to interview each other and record their results on a grid. They then use the grid to write an extended piece of evaluative writing - structure included to help students who require support. I have found this very useful to help students understand from the perspective of others in a fun way.
The resource contains a short Power Point with instructions; colour-coded differentiated characters; and a grid to record findings.
ASSEMBLY: COVID 19 LEGISLATION AND THE CONFLICT BETWEEN HUMAN RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES
This assembly lasts about 30 minutes (but can be cut down to 20) and it examines the conflict between freedom to (civil liberties) and freedom from (human rights) which has been associated with recent COVID legislation. It is delivered through clips of news reports; facts; consequences and questions in 4 specific areas:
Protecting the elderly and vulnerable through lockdowns
School closures
Business closures
Vaccines
It considers the short; medium and long term consequences and asks students to vote at the end - HUMAN RIGHTS OR CIVIL LIBERTIES?
Good for all ages, but very suitable for extending the thinking of children in key stage 3 and older key stage 2.
