Addition, working systematically
Key Stages: 2, 3 and 4 ★★

Can you arrange these dominoes to make this square so that each side has eight dots?

Dominoes are a great resource and this problem is an intriguing way to use them. Not only does this activity require logical thinking but it is also an interesting way of practising addition and subtraction, and it provides an opportunity to talk about different ways of recording.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

A great investigation for your class to try out. They will need to use their addition and subtraction skills, as well as working systematically to find a solution. The activity includes ideas to extend the more able, making it suitable for all. It's best to use real dominoes, but don't worry if you don't have any as a photocopiable sheet is provided.
