Chunking on the ENL is used to divide three-digit numbers by two-digit numbers, then the vertical layout, and then children are given the choice of which layout to use. A range of three-digit by two-digit multiplications and divisions are given to children and they are asked to decide how to solve them looking out for any that they can solve mentally, supported if necessary by informal jottings.
